The Help

3 Sep

I went to see “The Help” today, and my heart was so full by the end. Such a deeply human story filled with humor and heartbreak. The rawness of the characters and the stories they shared was a like breathing new air. To be in that era and to go through those challenges, is such a hard concept for most of us; but it is so important to realize how far we’ve come since then, and how far we still need to go to end the battles between race and class even in today’s society. I recommend everyone see this movie, and if you don’t leave there, feeling the need to be better or do better… then a didn’t understand the message it was trying to share….. Enjoy!

What The Water Gave Me

I’ve always been a HUGE Fan of Florence Welch, and this is just another reason why.
Her voice strikes me to my core, and gives me chills, her lyrics are every feeling brought to the surface.
I love her!

Whoa! Wednesday – Mandark

31 Aug

WHOA! Wednesday

ft. MANDARK THE ART SCIENTIST

So, this week as you’ve probably noticed we skipped on Turntable Tuesday…. Don’t worry, It will be back next week…. In the meantime, we haven’t don’t one of these in awhile, and this artist, is so amazing, I wanted to share with you. I had the same interview with MANDARK, that I have with every artist we feature here on Swizzy Land, and here’s what he had to say! Hope you enjoy his fun and creative visual creations!

How did you get started? That’s long story, but in a nutshell I’ve been doing art since I was 5 and didn’t take it seriously until my senior year of high school when I found out that people might actually pay for my imagination on canvas.

Why do you keep going? Art is my life and I LOVE to do it. My mom always told me to do what I love and not what I have to do. So I stuck tot hose words and push on.

Who/What inspires you? Music has always inspired me, I gain all of my inspiration while painting from music. Mainly I listen to MADLIB, J Dilla, The Mars Volta and all of my favorite local homies Chuuwee, Konkweest, (Lady Blue), Mad Flows and Illecism. My firl also keeps me inspired to keep moving. Especially when I’m feeling down about my career, she’s a real “pick me up”

What projects are currently working on?  I just finished a big project for a local Veteran clothing shop out here called “Getta Clue”, it was a store display for their front window. If anyone wants to view the process of my creating it, visit the website or YOUTUBE page. Right now I’m just working on putting out bigger pieces of work, I’m tired of working small. I’m also hoping on putting out some new shirts soon.

Turntable Tuesday – Nato Caliph

16 Aug

Happy Tuesday Blogger Babies!!!!

It’s Turntable Tuesday, and I have a GREAT treat for you…  Nato Caliph, a REAL emcee from St. Louis. His smooth voice lured me in and his deep lyrics kept me listening, it was an eargasm from the start. I think this might be one of my favorite stumble upons to date. Here’s what Nato Caliph had to say…… (I hope you like)

How you got started:  When I heard Rakim’s “Microphone Fiend,” I knew then, that I wanted to be an emcee.  But it wasn’t until a few years later, that I started out spitting poetry I had written at school, over my mothers cd singles with the instrumentals on them.  From there, I just kept writing.  Everyday, over even more complex beat patterns until I got my first real beat.  The rest, as they say, is history.

Why you keep going: My family, but also because I know that I have my own niche within the Hip Hop Universe.  I often ask myself if there is another “me” out there already, and I keep coming up with no one.  So that becomes/maintains my fuel as a man first, and writer/emcee 2nd, to keep going.

Who/What inspires you:  My family (immediate, and non-immediate), my community, St. Louis, U-City, people, struggle, achievement, failure, life, my peers (artist, and non-artist), my friends, the news, movies, and books.  Pretty much anything in society that has not been touched on enough.  My goal through my music is to bring about awareness, whether its for ones own self, or a group(s) of people.

What projects are you currently working on:  The “Force Majeure'” (EP), which is a collaborative effort between myself and Black Spade aka Stoney Rock.  Besides music, more videos, the “Doorway to The Force” tour coming in Oct., and I just launched my website www.natocaliph.com
